Alimta treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma

The company’s Alimta treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma saw sales of $73.1 million, up from $40 million in the third quarter, while sales of depression treatment Cymbalta were $61.3 million, compared with $32.5 million in the third quarter, mainly due to initial wholesaler stocking. Fourth-quarter sales of Forteo, a treatment for severe osteoporosis, were $74.3 million, up from $58.1 million in the third quarter.

Deaths from mesothelioma, an asbestos-related lung cancer, will peak within ten years in the UK and then fall to a much lower level, according to new figures published in this week’s British Journal of Cancer. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer in the lining of the lungs or the lining of the abdomen. It is thought that the majority of cases are the result of exposure to asbestos, but the disease can take up to sixty years to develop.

In his first forum ruling as chief of the nation’s largest asbestos case docket, Judge Daniel J. Stack argued the “astronomical burden” of looming trials demanded he dismiss cases that were not connected directly to Madison County. In Paul & Lorraine Palmer v. Riley Stoker Corp. et. al., Stack ordered the case moved to a courtroom closer to “where the plaintiff claims (asbestos) exposure.” The Palmers filed suit in February 2004, charging asbestos negligence against eighty-seven companies, a list that included familar names like Ford, General Motors, Exxon, Shell, Sears, BP, and Viacom. MINNEAPOLIS MN Hundreds played on asbestos-tainted pile

MINNEAPOLIS - More than 650 people say that when they were kids, they played on an asbestos-tainted vermiculite scrap pile at a northeast Minneapolis factory, a Minnesota Department of Health survey has found. The three-year survey was disclosed to neighborhood residents in recent weeks. It also identified 49 former workers at the plant that was last operated by the W.R. Grace & Co. A separate report on exposure to the workers and their families has yet to be released.

“In America, claims for so-called ‘unimpaired lives’ - for the worry of potentially catching an asbestos-related disease - now form around three-quarters of all asbestos-related US claims,” he said. “It is highly undesirable for the UK to go down this route, which diverts resources from claimants with real and serious injuries.” The researchers point to a likely increase in mesothelioma claims over the next few years. Mesothelioma, a relatively rare form of cancer, is probably the most serious asbestos-related disease. It is usually fatal within two years of diagnosis, can develop as a result of very low asbestos exposure and symptoms may not appear for 40 or 50 years. While the manufacture and use of asbestos has fallen in western Europe and North America in recent decades, it has continued to expand in Asia and parts of eastern Europe. (more…)
